A 40-tonne Euro VI truck running the full A1 corridor from the Hungarian border to Bucharest (roughly 560 km of motorway) pays about 269 lei one way. The same truck in Euro III/0 pays about 347 lei for the identical distance.
The Romanian toll estimate appears on the UIT code itself

When does TollRo actually start?
Tariffs are applied from 1 October 2026. The technical infrastructure, meaning the STRR electronic road charging system, had to be in place by 31 August 2026, but that earlier date is an implementation deadline, not the date operators start paying. The two-stage calendar was confirmed by CNAIR with reference to article 29(1) of Law 226/2023.
Who has to pay TollRo?
Freight transport vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3.5 tonnes, on motorways, express roads and national roads in Romania. Cars and goods vehicles at or below 3.5 tonnes stay in the vignette (rovinietă) system.
How is the charge calculated?
Unit tariff multiplied by kilometres driven. The unit tariff depends on three things: the vehicle's maximum authorised mass, the type of road, and the Euro emissions class. National roads are charged at 50% of the motorway and express road rate. Euro V/IV pay 15% above the Euro VI base rate; Euro III/0 pay 30% above it.
How can a foreign carrier pay?
In practice, two ways at launch. A route ticket bought in advance for a defined trip, or CNAIR's free eTarife app, paying trip by trip. The third route, a SETRo contract with an on-board unit that reports distance and settles automatically, is the one any regular operator will end up on, but as we write this no SETRo provider is authorised yet, so it cannot be contracted. Until it can, TollRo is paid manually.
Will one OBU cover Romania and the rest of Europe?
Eventually, yes, but not from 1 October. Romania becomes interoperable with the other member states through the European Electronic Toll Service (SETRe) on 15 January 2027, and from that date SETRe-accredited providers can handle Romanian payments in an integrated way. Until then your existing EETS box does not cover Romania, and the country is a separate arrangement.
